A lipoma is a type of benign skin lump that is composed of fatty tissues. These fatty lumps are located between the skin and the underlying muscle layer. Normally, these lumps don’t cause any harm and grow at a very gradual rate. However, in some cases, a lipoma may be present right above the blood vessels and when it grows, the blood vessels get compressed. Due to this, lipomas may cause pain and discomfort.
Procedure
Lipoma diagnosis usually involves a simple physical examination. It is easy to feel and inspect as the lump is visible from the outside. Lipoma also moves when touched as it is made up of fatty tissues. Other than that, tests like ultrasound scan, MRI scan, and CT scan are also performed for accurate diagnosis of lipoma.
The effective treatment of lipoma involves surgery. During the procedure, the doctor makes a small excision and uses the liposuction technique to extract the fatty tissues.
