Warts are viral infection caused by human papilloma virus. They are usually asymptomatic. The symptoms of warts can vary depending on the location and severity. Warts often present as a single growth and sometimes as a cluster of multiple growths. Most of the time, warts are painless. They may be painful in areas such as soles, when there is a secondary bacterial infection or when located on genitalia or peri-anal region. Warts on genitalia or oral mucosa may sometime causing bleeding and ulceration.
Common presentation of warts is:
- Flesh-colored or grey growths around your vagina, anus, or upper thighs.
- Cauliflower-like growths.
- Growths may be internal.
- Itching or bleeding from your vagina or anus.
- Changes to the flow of urine.
- Flat papules on face especially beard and eyebrow.
Symptoms may not appear for weeks, even years after coming in contact with the virus. Hence it is often difficult to trace the source.
Treatment of warts depends on the area affected, age of the patient.
CORN/CALLUSES are usually seen on palms and soles/ areas with friction. they are usually painful and cause difficulty in tasks such as walking.
Treatment
There are several different ways that warts can be treated. Treatment options include topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing), laser surgery, and electrosurgery, immunomodulators, antiviral medication, immunotherapy. Some methods may be more effective than others depending on the size and location of the warts. Visible warts on the outside of your body are easier to treat. Warts are usually recurrent and may require multiple sittings of treatment for complete elimination.
Corns/Calluses can be treated by applying topical salycilic acid preparations, cryotherapy, surgical removal, paring. However if associated with faulty footwear or abnormal foot arches, lifestyle and footwear modification is to be done.
