Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disease. The disease is characterised by remissions and exacerbations. It is a treatable condition; however, cure is not possible.
The exact cause of psoriasis is not known. It is a genetic disease, mediated by T-lymphocytes. Psoriasis is triggered by emotional/physical stress, infections,medications ( anti- malarial, pain killers, vaccination, certain anti-hypertensives). Skin lesions can trigger during winter season/ cold climate.
Types of psoriasis:
- Scalp psoriasis- severe scaling and patches on the scalp.
- Plaque psoriasis- dry, scaly patches often itchy on the body.
- Inverse psoriasis- scaly or non-scaly patches in armpits, groins, under breasts, genitalia.
- Nail psoriasis- discoloration, roughness, brittle nails
- Pustular psoriasis- pus filled blisters usually associated with fever, chills,severe itching.
- Psoriatic arthritis- inflammation,tenderness, stiffness of joints in addition to skin patches.
Treatment
Topical: choice of treatment in mild cases. Medicated creams and emollients will be suggested depending on the area of involvement and extent of disease.
Systemic: in moderate to severe cases medications may be suggested usually oral, sometimes injections.
Phototherapy: Light therapy is suggested in patients with extensive disease as an adjuvant to topical and systemic therapy.
