Scar Reduction
A scar is a band of fibrous tissue formed at a spot of injury. At the wound site, the collagen fibers are arranged differently resulting in an unusual texture forming a scar. A scar is a normal healing mechanism of the body and appears raised and discolored that flatten and become lighter in shades over time. When the wound or injury affect deep layer, excess tissues and collagen are produced at the wound site and the collagen fibers cross-links to align in a single direction making them appear raised with a different texture. The type of scar developed at a wound site depends on numerous factors including the depth and size of the lesion, location, blood supply to the wound site, skin depth and shade and the direction of the scar. There are three types of scars:
- Hypertrophic: when too much collagen is produced causing skin bumps or flaps on the skin.
- Atrophic: during the healing process, the tissue may be lost causing depressions in the skin.
- Acne scars: acne breakouts cause deep layer tissue damage forming scars
What does the treatment do?
If you’re embarrassed or self-conscious about the appearance of scarring, skin resurfacing by laser, microneedling etc. alone or combined with Platelet rich plasma may provide a solution. Scar reduction treatment can be used to repair the abnormally formed scar tissue, allowing it to be replaced by fresher, healthier skin as it heals.
Scar reduction treatment can be totally personalised to each patient depending on the severity, age of scar, age of patient,location of the scar. Some scars cannot be treated entirely, but it is possible to reduce the appearance to make them less noticeable.
